Hey there. I'm Rob Chandler. I joined Bones Jones Music in April 2021 to fulfill a promise I made to myself a long time ago.
I first played guitar when I was 12, in my seventh grade music class. I loved playing, and felt like I was pretty good at it, but once the class was over I didn’t really have an outlet for continuing to learn. I resolved to get back to playing “someday,” and occasionally over the years I would start making plans to restart my guitar odyssey, but, of course, life happened while I was making those other plans. I reserved closet space for that old guitar in every house I lived in for 30+ years, expecting to put it to use when I was finally able to make the time.
I decided to get serious about learning.
Eventually, the COVID lockdowns helped open up some space in my schedule. At the time, I was nearing my 50th birthday, and I decided I would finally make good on the promise I’d made to my younger self. I floundered around on my own for a while, and although it was a struggle, I quickly discovered that I still loved playing.
I also had begun to see that playing music really should be a shared experience, so it was important to me to have opportunities to play with others. What drew me to BJM was the fact that they work with a lot of adult learners like me. Naturally, teaching kids is not the same as teaching busy middle-aged professionals. Billy understands that and is great at both. I also joined because BJM affords lots of opportunities to play with others.
Billy and the community at BJM are fantastic!
Billy is a fantastic teacher. He unquestionably knows his stuff, but more importantly, he is great at breaking down concepts in a way that makes them usable to those of us who didn’t go to music school. He’s extraordinarily patient and always positive. And with his experience in the industry, his lessons go beyond the technical aspects of playing an instrument, and include learning how to sound great in a performance environment.
I also really appreciate the community at BJM. Everyone here is very supportive, and I often find myself learning a lot from the other students in the room. Also, the natural back-and-forth between students in class and in my band has dramatically expanded the way I think about music and the types of music I listen to.
It absolutely is possible to learn to play later in life.
To anyone thinking of joining, I would say do it. It absolutely is possible to learn to play later in life, as I and many of my classmates can attest. And Billy is the guy who can help you. Moreover, playing with others and performing doesn’t need to wait until you have mastered your instrument, and truly will put your learning on warp speed.
I’m excited about everything our band Lawyers, Guns, Monday is playing right now, but particularly Midnight Train to Memphis by Chris Stapleton, Saving Grace by Tom Petty, and Oh Well by the Rockets.
